I don’t know about you, but I’m sitting here in what use to be a zone 8 planting area wondering where winter is. Don’t get me wrong, it was 30 degrees or so this morning. There was definitely frost on the grown when I got up to let the dogs out. But this may be the third time this season that there has been frost on the ground. Some of my more overachieving daffodils are trying to peek up in response to all the warmish weather we’ve been having. I was thinking they might live to regret their decision, but maybe not.
My completely unscientific survey makes a lot of sense when coupled with the new map from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Apparently our hardiness zones are shifting northward. So basically in one swoop the growing season in my area has been extended (yeah!) AND I am now running behind in my preparations and yearly routine (boo!). sigh. If you want to see if you’re hardiness zone has changed, check out this interactive map from the USDA.
In the meantime…Hi ho! Hi ho! It’s off to Lowes I go.
